Our opera-themed Sunday Matinee this weekend features countertenor Max Emanuel Cenčić. He joins period-instrument experts Les Talens Lyriques and Christophe Rousset at the jewel-like Markgräfliches Opernhaus in Bayreuth to sing the aria "O se la sua beltà" from Act I of Nicola Porpora's 'Ifigenia in Aulide'. The aria is taken from a varied full concert programme, in which Cenčić presents arias by Handel and Porpora written for legendary castrato Francesco Bernardi (known as Senesino). Simultaneously, Les Talens Lyriques demonstrate Hamburg's Oper am Gänsemarkt as a crucible of invention and innovation under the directorship of composer Reinhard Keiser and the site of early Handel premieres and Telemann’s greatest successes.
