Oklou: KCRW Live From HQ (Full Performance)
French singer and producer Marylou Mayniel, better known by her stage name Oklou (pronounced ‘okay-lou’), feels less like an artist you “listen to” and more like a spirit guide you travel with.
Oklou turns the listener into a satellite for a bit. Circling, observing, recalibrating. In her orbit you’re far, far away from the grind, the doomscroll, the daily clench, but not so far that you drift into nothingness.
On her excellent debut album, choke enough, the songs move like soft weather: airy vocals drifting over finely cut electronic textures, then suddenly landing on a harmonic turn. The sonic atmosphere traces a line from classical sensibilities and choral, harpsichord-like brightness all the way to the modern French electronic lineage.
