VOCES8: Sound the Trumpet by Henry Purcell
VOCES8 Altos, Katie Jeffries-Harris and Barnaby Smith sing Henry Purcell’s ‘Sound the Trumpet’ with Joseph Crouch (Cello), and Steven Devine (Harpsichord).
Written in 1694 for the birthday of Queen Mary II, 'Come, Ye Sons of Art' is one of Purcell’s final and most joyous odes. Its celebrated duet 'Sound the Trumpet' showcases Purcell’s genius for vocal writing—two voices in playful imitation, weaving jubilant fanfares that seem to summon the instruments named in the text.
TEXT by Nahum Tate (1652 - 1715)
Sound the trumpet till around
You make the listening shores rebound.
On the sprightly oboy play.
All the instruments of joy
That skilful numbers can employ
To celebrate the glory of this day.
