My kids grew up singing this song at home and I always thought it was a simple French children's song. Then I discovered it's over 400 years old, was sung by the first French settlers in Canada in 1604, and was later used as a secret resistance song against the British occupation of Quebec.
The lyrics about lost love were actually coded longing for France itself.
