Hearing the origins of the four-hand piano repertoire on an instrument of the period allows us to appreciate the unadorned elegance of the sonatas by Burney and Mozart. It was later the arrangements that would propel four-hand composition towards far more ambitious goals and undertakings. The transcription of Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Symphony by the great pedagogue Carl Czerny brings this cycle to a close with a prime example of that new and fruitful era.
