Video Description:

In the midsection of this little solo excerpt are some variations on a 5/16 pattern.

  • People keep asking me about how and what I think while playing and modulating the pattern.
  • So here it is, and since that section indeed is based on the ‘wonderful’ variation and counterparts of numbers, I invited no other than The Count to lift the secret during that very part.

1. It’s a 5/16 (which I subdivide into counting two 8th notes and a remaining 16th, -1, 2 and 1, 2 and- even though technically it should be named -1, 3 and- but the -1, 2 and- version creates a more brain friendly environment I’d say.

Here are some variations:

  1. This 5/16 pattern is insert into a 5/4 pattern.
  2. It becomes part of a modulated shuffle, serving as a broken 5-tuplet over 4/4.
  3. The patters becomes a 15/16, divided and counted in 3 quarter notes plus 3x16th notes.
  4. Over pattern 4 the Hihat accents every first note of a group of 3x16th, which makes it play 5 equal notes over the 15/16 and the already inserted 3x of the 5/16 within that pattern.

So there it is, secret lifted and thank you ‘Count’ for having so much fun with numbers. Now let’s get back to just jamming a bit over 4/4, which is also a ‘woooonerful’ signature after all that other mindf****.
