Aretha Franklin and the Queens of Soul | Zara McFarlane Quartet · MarchVivo
The Black Musics series pays tribute to two pivotal figures in the history of soul, a genre born from the fusion of gospel, blues and jazz. Aretha Franklin, ‘The Queen of Soul’, and Nina Simone, ‘The High Priestess of Soul’, combined vocal virtuosity with social commitment. Their voices – distinctive, powerful, captivating – pushed the expressive boundaries of African-American singing, which they imbued with profound emotional and political depth.
- Bessie Smith (1894-1937)
