( Simon Popp Trio )
Groovige Trommelgewitter und satte Klanglandschaften.
The drummer and composer Simon Popp, living in Munich, plays with an incredible sense of timing and mood through polyrhythmic structures. He contrasts earthy and airy sounds, blurs the boundaries between electronic and acoustic music, and sets a powerful statement for what contemporary drum music can be today: A rich sound world that uses the complete range of all percussion instruments.
Whether driving or meditative, Popp's music makes its own category in a non-category. "The strength of this music lies precisely in the fact that it deliberately does not clarify itself in terms of jazz, pop, or world music." (Süddeutsche Zeitung). In 2023, Simon Popp was awarded the Music Promotion Prize by the Landeshauptstadt München. His albums Laya, Devi and Blizz found international acclaim.
Bleep compared Popp to the experimental greats Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Together with the no less talented drummers Flurin Mück (CH) and Sebastian Wolfgruber (DE), Popp presented his Drum Trio on numerous stages such as Überjazz Hamburg, Leipziger Jazztagen or Studio 2 of Bayerischer Rundfunk. Now also at Musig Im Pflegidach, Muri.
