House Carpenter | Patrick Bartley Trio
My arrangement of an old ballad originally known as "The Demon Lover", live at Monks Jazz Club in Austin, TX. May 13, 2024.
I first heard this song back in 2013 when I was listening to a collection of early pre-jazz and jazz-adjacent music of the 1910s and 20s called "Before The Blues: Early Black American Music Vol. 3", and this version of "House Carpenter" played.
I was so mesmerized by it that I knew I wanted to play it someday. So, back in 2019, I made an arrangement of it, and this is what it ended up being.
Here's the recording I referenced. I studied the general flow and phrasing of the way Clarence Ashley sings it, so I have no idea if it's the original, or not - sorry for my hardcore bluegrass lovers:
- Patrick Bartley - Alto Sax
- Russell Hall - Bass
- Stefan Klein - Drums
